Why Be an SPCO Member?

SPCO Members are Union painting contractors who manage the needs of their companies and their employees through cooperative efforts. Monthly contractor meetings provide a forum to not only discuss painting industry issues affecting Union contractors, but to oversee management’s participation in benefit programs serving the Union contractor companies. Members participate on trusts to oversee Health and Welfare (medical, dental and vision insurance), Pension (retirement plans), and Apprenticeship and Training (joint training center).

SPCO members are leaders in apprenticeship and training. Through affiliation with District Council #5 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, SPCO members provide their employees state-of-the-art training and certifications. Training courses cover such topics as OSHA requirements, lead abatement, carcinogenic awareness and safety, fall protection, personal protective equipment, hazardous materials handling and disposal, first aid and on-the-job health and safety. Employees are required to maintain their certifications and complete annual continuing education. The employers also have access to a complete drug testing program to comply with general contractor and property owner requirements.

Members are also committed to the management of an OSHA approved Safety Committee that serves all SPCO members.  As the negotiating body for the Union Contract SPCO members also serve on the Painter’s Union Management Partnership (P.U.M.P) Committee that acts as the forum for the relationship and communication between Management and Labor.

The organization provides access to shared knowledge and open idea exchanges among members. SPCO members share valuable programs and services. All members are published in the membership roster, industry news articles and on the SPCO web site. Members may choose paid membership in the Society of Protective Coatings, Painting Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA), The Crime Prevention Program of the Pacific Northwest, SafeBuild Alliance  and The Finest in the Finishing Trades multi-trade cooperative. Members receive vehicle decals, hard had decals and PDCA Safety Manual. The group participates in high school recruiting activities, The Finest in the Finishing Trades joint trades program and shared public education and marketing services.
